Bodyguards: They Most Definitely are Not Like Us….
In One Hundred Desires, Vivian Armstrong is the newly-appointed head of Vortex Security, and the sole female bodyguard among a staff of males (who also happen to be her brothers). Up until the start of the story, she has always been given low-profile jobs—a lot of babysitting of executives and children—but protecting rock star Red Blakely is her first high-profile gig, and her opportunity to prove to her family that she can be just as effective of a bodyguard as her brothers.
So, what’s it like to be a high-profile bodyguard in real life?
Bodyguard Jacquie Davis, who says she was the first female bodyguard in the UK and was the subject of a Netflix movie, Close, has said that being a bodyguard is not glamorous, despite what people might think. Even though it may involve staying in the best hotels and guarding celebrities and other high-profile dignitaries, you’re thinking on your feet 12-16 hours a day. And forget about having a personal life—you could be on the road for eight to ten weeks at a time. (Not exactly the best for developing relationships.)
And of course, don’t forget the danger you might find yourself in! Your job, after, all, is protection. Davis, throughout her career, has been stabbed, shot at, thrown through a window, and chased through the streets of dangerous countries. But she has also said that you can’t be afraid of the job. (I don’t think anyone wants a timid bodyguard.)
